Oil & Gas Property Tax

The Property Tax Group is responsible for assessing a value on all oil and gas exploration, production and transportation property located in Alaska. The property tax function is governed by AS 43.56 and 15 AAC 56, which can be found under the Statutes/Regulations link below.

The oil and gas property tax rate is 20 mills, or 2 percent of the assessed value. Property tax returns are due on January 15 of each year. A credit of up to 20 mills against the statewide imposed tax for taxes imposed on AS 43.56 property by local taxing jurisdictions is allowed.

The total assessed value under AS 43.56 in 2008 was just over $17.9 billion. Alaska has approximately 130 taxpayers paying under this type.

AS 43.56 also provides for an appeal procedure should a dispute in value occur where the properties are located.
